Diversity and Inclusion

We have a global presence and seek to employ a workforce that reflects diversity the diverse populations we serve. A diverse workforce brings different perspectives, ideas and skills – driving innovation in our products and enabling us to meet the needs of all our customers around the world.

As an inclusive company we embrace diversity of individuals, opinions, cultures and abilities. Our inclusion strategy covers three aspects:

  • Workforce: To achieve a globally diverse talent pipeline we embrace and value diverse individuals and we actively seek them. We want to create a diverse workforce and a leadership team that is well represented around the world.
  • Workplace: To create a great place to work by providing an environment that enables all employees to experience successful careers at Motorola. We offer the technology, flexibility and space to suit the needs of our employees. Read more about work-life integration.
  • Marketplace: To achieve external alliances that reflect our commitment to inclusion in the marketplace and in the communities where we do business. We aim to meet the needs of global customers by being an inclusive employer, supplier and neighbor to our global communities.

We form alliances with global diversity organizations to help us stay current on employment best practices, employee engagement techniques and recruitment and retention strategies. These alliances support our efforts to attract the best talent, from the entry-level graduate to our most senior executive. Examples include:

Through the Motorola Foundation, we also support organizations working to address the shortage of women and people of color in science, technology, engineering and math.

Diversity councils

Our business councils help integrate inclusion into our marketing, community involvement, recruitment and employee development initiatives.

The councils, comprising employees and each led by a senior executive, raise cultural awareness, sponsor inclusion events and collaborate with external community organizations. They also provide professional development experiences and mentoring to our employees. Our councils include:

  • Global Advisory Council
  • Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Business Council
  • Latino Business Council
  • People with Disabilities Business Council
  • Women's Business Council

Our Global Diversity Advisory Council includes representatives from each of our businesses who meet to share information and drive the inclusion and diversity strategy globally. Each of the representatives on the council has a diversity and inclusion scorecard (linked to an overall company scorecard), which the representatives present to the head of their business each year.

Workforce

In 2010 the proportion of females in senior management globally was 16 percent, U.S. people of color in senior management (directors and vice presidents) was 15 percent, and the proportion of senior management outside the U.S. was 13 percent.

In 2011 we will continue to work with organizations that source diverse candidates.

 

Workplace

In 2010 we held a town hall meeting highlighting the importance of diversity to the company. During the event, participants discussed how inclusion and diversity is a critical imperative for Motorola and should be seen as a source of competitive advantage. Global Inclusion and Diversity Awards were also presented during the meeting. The awards recognize employees, nominated by their colleagues, who have demonstrated support for inclusion and diversity or who have helped to make Motorola a great place to work.

In March, Motorola celebrated International Women’s Day at the Innovation Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, which focused on a discussion on how companies that are inclusive deliver superior business results.

Marketplace

In 2010, Motorola Foundation grants to U.S. programs benefiting people of color remained steady at $4.9 million. We spent 9.1 percent of U.S. procurement spend with global diversity suppliers.

We continued to maintain relationships with organizations focusing on providing science, technology, engineering, math and environmental education for all student levels and providing scholarships for young people.

Business council activity

In 2010 members of Motorola’s Women’s Business Council and Global Inclusion and Diversity Office attended the third Global Women’s Leadership Forum (GWLF).

Our Asian Business Council hosted 75 potential and existing customers from China at the Motorola Innovation Center, Schaumburg. The event aimed to improve business relations between Motorola and Chinese companies. Among the visitors were influential people in the mining, healthcare and public safety sectors.
