Every new mobile phone and accessory we design is assessed for compliance with materials regulations, energy performance and packaging minimization. Our entire mobile device product range is now free from brominated flame retardants (BFR) and contains no PVC or phthalates.

Our RAZR MAXX HD exemplifies our green design thinking. Not only is it manufactured to be BFR, PVC and phthalate free, it also has features to prolong its useful life and software to save energy.  Splash proof design reduces the risk of water damage in use (a common cause of premature phone disposal). The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system delivers regular software updates so the functionality never dates. SMARTACTIONS software saves energy (and carbon dioxide emissions) while also achieving the longest standby and call time performance. It’s so efficient, you can talk continuously on RAZR MAXX HD for over 21 hours without having to charge the handset!

In addition to greening handsets, we have focused on cutting the environmental impact of chargers. This involved significant reductions to standby power consumption, when the charger is plugged in but not connected to a mobile phone. The second major challenge was to achieve a “universal charger” for the industry.

Motorola Mobility collaborated with 16 other leading mobile operators and manufacturers and the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) Association to agree on a specification for a universal charger that is compatible with products from any manufacturer. This has the advantage of making the charger an option when purchasing a mobile phone since consumers will increasingly already have a charger that is compatible with their new phone. This effort has the potential to reduce the number of chargers manufactured and transported each year by 50 percent, cutting an estimated 13.6 to 21.8 million metric tonnes (15 to 24 million U.S. tons) of CO2 equivalent emissions from the industry’s carbon footprint.

Since the new universal charger may be retained in consumers’ homes for a longer period, it is especially important that it has excellent energy performance. Motorola Mobility’s universal charger, launched in 2012, has a standby power consumption of 0.1W and will work across all devices on the market at the time it is released.

We also market a dual-port universal charger, the 4W Iconic. This has a low 0.1W standby power and enables two devices to be charged simultaneously. 4W Iconic has 38-percent less materials than the two chargers it can replace.

In 2012, we launched the Universal Power Pack P4000 incorporating as many green attributes as possible. The P4000 comes without a wall charger and like all of our power packs, is free from BFR and contains no PVC or phthalates. In addition, 25 percent of the plastic casing is made from recycled water bottle plastic and the product lifecycle is certified CarbonFree® through the purchase of carbon offsets. When it is eventually time to recycle the P4000, screwed (not glued) construction makes dismantling simple.

We launched our first CarbonFree® certified feature phone in 2008, the W233 Renew. Since that time, we have launched a number of CarbonFree® certified chargers and smartphones. These select products are certified as CarbonFree® through our alliance with Carbonfund.org™. Each CarbonFree® product undergoes a rigorous lifecycle assessment to determine the product carbon footprint. Our lifecycle assessment is validated by Carbonfund.org to provide a carbon footprint value for the product. We then purchase sufficient carbon offsets to match the estimated amount of greenhouse gases emitted during manufacturing, distribution and use of the product during its lifecycle. To date, Motorola Mobility has shipped more than 2.5 million CarbonFree® certified products worldwide. The carbon offsets for these products have been generated from renewable energy, reforestation and energy-efficiency projects.

GREEN APPS

Smartphone apps can potentially play a part in helping consumers make green choices and transition to low-impact lifestyles. Our Smart Actions app pre-installed on DROID RAZR/ Motorola RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX and DROID 4 models, can significantly extend the call and standby time of a smartphone and reduce the number of battery-charge cycles by one third (over the working life of the product). The app allows you to set actions on the device that conserve the battery. For example, as the battery charge winds down, the phone settings can automatically dim the display or change other usage settings to conserve remaining power.
